2017 U.S. Open Betting Preview and Trends

After posting his first major victory at last year’s US Open, Dustin Johnson returns as the tournament favorite this weekend when the field tees off at Erin Hills.

As long as he can avoid another trip down the stairs Johnson will begin the first round on Thursday as the favorite. Johnson was among the favorites heading into the Masters earlier this year before he had to pull out after injuring his back falling down the stairs. On the US Open odds at the Bovada Sportsbook Johnson is a +750 favorite.

If you make your golf betting picks based on US Open course history you’ll be out of luck this year. This is the first time that Erin Hills will be hosting the tournament. The course, which is located in Erin, Wisconsin, is just over a decade old and did play host to the US Amateur in 2011.

Following Johnson on the odds list at the Bovada Sportsbook are the usual suspects, with Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy both at +1200, Jason Day at +1400 and Jon Rahm at +2000.

Spieth and McIlroy will both be in search of their second US Open title, Spieth having won in 2015 and McIlroy in 2011. Spieth finished well back in 37th place last year, while McIlroy missed the cut last year and has only cracked the Top 10 at the tournament once since winning.

Day has come close in the US Open numerous times, but has never been able to put it all together to win the tournament. In the last six years Day has finished in the Top 10 five times, including finishing as the runner up in 2011 and 2013.

Rahm will be playing in only his second US Open and his first as a professional. Last year he was the low amateur and tied for 23rd place. Since recording his first PGA Tour victory earlier this year he’s been a regular contender with five Top-5 finishes.

Masters champ Sergio Garcia finally got the monkey off his back at Augusta to win his first major tournament, which could take some of the pressure off at Erin Hills. He’s a +2200 underdog at the Bovada Sportsbook to make it back-to-back majors this weekend.

Along with Johnson, Spieth and McIlroy there are a number of other former US Open winners in this year’s field. They include Martin Kaymer (+6600), Justin Rose (+2200), Webb Simpson (+17,500), Graeme McDowell (+15,000), Lucas Glover (+15,000), Angel Cabrera (+40,000), Jim Furyk (+25,000), and two-time champion Ernie Els (+30,000).
