2019 PGA Tour Championship Betting Preview

The FedExCup will be awarded this weekend, with the winner of this week’s PGA Tour Championship taking home the Cup and the $15-million prize.

The structure of the Tour Championship is a little different this year. The top 30 players in the FedExCup standings will play this week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, but they’ll be placed in a new seeded format.

The FedExCup points leader is the top seed and starts the tournament at 10 under par. The remaining seeds have less of an advantage with No. 2 at 8 under, No. 3 at 7 under, No. 4 at 6 under and No. 5 at 5 under. The rest of the 30-player field have been placed into groups of five with their starting score ranging from 4 under to even par. At the end of 72 holes, the player with the lowest aggregate score combined with their starting strokes wins the tournament and the FedExCup.

Justin Thomas favored to win Tour Championship

The top seed this week and the favorite on the Tour Championship odds at Bovada Sportsbook is Justin Thomas. Thomas, listed at +250 at Bovada, won last week’s BMW Championship to move to the top of the FedExCup standings. He will be going after his second FedExCup title after previously winning in 2017.

Following Thomas on the seeding list and on the odds are No. 2 seed Patrick Cantlay at +450 and No. 3 seed Brooks Koepka at +500.

Cantlay finished second behind Thomas last week, while Koepka finally lost his lead in the FedExCup standings after finishing tied for 24th.

Tiger Woods not in field to defend 2018 title

Thomas isn’t the only former FedExCup champ in this week’s small field. 2018 champion Justin Rose (+4000) has a shot to repeat but it will be difficult as he starts as the No. 17 seed at 2 under par. Rory McIlroy (+800) won the FedExCup in 2016 and will start this week at 5 under as the No. 5 seed. The last former FedExCup champ in the field is Brandt Snedeker (+12500), who won in 2012. As the No. 18 seed, he’ll also start the tournament at 2 under.

The defending champion of the Tour Championship, Tiger Woods won’t be back to defend, as he failed to crack the top 30. There are three former tournament winners in this week’s field, starting with 2017 champion Xander Schauffele (+2800). As the No. 8 seed, he’ll start at 4 under. The other two former winners at East Lake are McIlroy from 2016 and Snedeker from 2012.
