NFL Betting: Week 4 Line Report

Dogs had their day during Week 3 of the NFL season. Heading into Monday Night Football, teams taking the points were a profitable 11-5 against the spread with seven of those underdogs winning outright as well. That big day for the pups pushed the season ATS count to 27-20 for underdogs, covering at more than 57 percent.

More points are for the picking in Week 4. There are a handful of lines out that aren't sitting right with early NFL bettors. Here's a look at a couple games to keep an eye on as Sunday draws near:

Arizona Cardinals at San Diego Chargers (-9, 46)

Some markets opened the Chargers as 9.5-point home favorites for this matchup and instantly took money on the underdog, moving the line as low as -8. San Diego did not impress bettors with its 27-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks as a 3.5-point road favorite in Week 3.

The Bolts were burned on special teams twice against the Seahawks, spoiling a record day from quarterback Philip Rivers. San Diego has allowed three scores on kick and punt returns already this season and opponents are averaging 32.6 yards on kick returns and 25.5 yards on punt returns – second last in the NFL. Giving up that much ground in the field position battle is a big reason why the Chargers are 1-2 straight up and against the spread.

San Francisco 49ers at Atlanta Falcons (-6.5, 42.5)

An 0-3 start for the Niners already has heads rolling in the Bay Area. San Francisco fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye on Monday following the team's 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3. The 49ers' offense has been a mess since Week 1, averaging just 12.7 points on 310 yards per game. Raye's replacement, QB coach Mike Johnson, will likely face the same problems.

But oddsmakers are more in love with the Falcons than discounting the Niners. Atlanta is coming off a thrilling overtime victory against the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. But in reality, the Falcons should have lost that game if not for some poor kicking on behalf of the Saints. This number has already come down from its opening of -7 with sharp bettors smelling a letdown spot in San Fran from a mile away.
