Workday Charity Open Betting Odds Preview

The PGA begins back-to-back weeks at Muirfield Village Golf Club on Thursday with the Workday Charity Open.

If the Workday Charity Open doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because it’s a one-off that is replacing the John Deere Classic for this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since this tournament has never been held before, and supposedly will never be held again, you would expect that bettors would be lacking any history to look over. That’s not exactly the case, though.

The tournament may be new but the venue, Muirfield, has been a staple on the tour for years while hosting the Memorial Tournament. It will do so again the week after the Workday. At last year’s Memorial, Patrick Cantlay recorded his second career PGA win by shooting 19 under par for a two-stroke victory over Adam Scott.

At Bovada Sportsbook, Cantlay is a +1400 underdog to win again at Muirfield this week. Since the PGA returned from hiatus, Cantlay has played in one event, finishing tied for 11th in the Travelers Championship.

Thomas +1200 favorite in Workday Charity Open

The favorite at Bovada this week is Justin Thomas at +1200. Thomas, who is currently ranked fifth on the World Golf Rankings, posted consecutive top-10 finishes in his first two events since the PGA return but followed that up by missing the cut at the Travelers Championship.

Following Thomas on the odds at Bovada and sharing +1400 odds with Cantlay are Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka.

Rahm has failed to mount much of a challenge in three tournaments since the tour resumed play. At the Travelers Championship, he tied for 37th after tying for 33rd at the RBC Heritage and missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Koepka posted his best result of the season three weeks ago at the RBC Heritage when he placed seventh. However, he ended up withdrawing from the Travelers Championship after his caddie tested positive for COVID-19.

Matsuyama has four top-five finishes this year

One strong pick for bettors this week might be Hideki Matsuyama at +1600. He’s still looking for his first win of the season but he has finished in the top five on four occasions, including a pair of runner-up finishes. Matsuyama has also won at Muirfield before, having won the Memorial in 2014.

Other former winners of the Memorial in this week’s field include Justin Rose (+2500), Matt Kuchar (+4000), Jim Furyk (+12500), Jason Dufner (+20000) and Steve Stricker (+40000).
