NFL Betting: Week 5 Odds

The NFL season is nearly one third of the way through and the one glaring trend catching everyone's eye is the dominance of underdogs. Sportsbooks are making a killing with the way pups are cashing in this year.

As of Monday night, teams getting the points are 37-24 against the spread. That's almost 61 percent. With the betting public traditionally loving the chalk, books could be trimming the pointspreads in anticipation of a flood of underdog money in Week 5. Here's a look at some of the most interesting lines on the board:

Jacksonville Jaguars at Buffalo Bills (+1, 41)

It seems a win over the defending AFC champs won't buy the respect of oddsmakers. Jacksonville, coming off its last-second victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4, is just a 1-point fave against the 0-4 Bills on Sunday. Books originally opened Buffalo as a 1-point home favorite but early money has flipped the spread.

Of course, sharp bettors are looking for a letdown spot after such an emotional win for the Jaguars. And, according to the early forecast, the team from Florida will be playing in some chilly northern weather as temperatures could dip into the low 40's Sunday. The total has also jumped a point since post. The Bills have the worst defense in the NFL, while Jacksonville sits second-last in total yards allowed.

Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers (-3.5, N/A)

Most books have yet to set the line for this Sunday night showdown. The Eagles' quarterback situation is the reason why. According to sources close to the team, starter Michael Vick will not play in Week 5 after suffering cartilage damage to his ribs in the loss to the Redskins Sunday. That leaves the team in the hands of Kevin Kolb, who didn't look that good versus Washington, passing for 201 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the 17-12 defeat as 5-point home favorites.

The Niners are 0-4 and coming off a devastating loss to the Falcons. However, the last time San Francisco was at home it nearly knocked off the defending Super Bowl champs and covered as a 4.5-point home underdog. Scoring is still the big problem in San Fran. The 49ers put just 14 points on the board last week and average only 13 points per game – second-lowest in the NFL. With Kolb under center for Philadelphia, and the Niners offense sputtering, the under could be the play in this game.
