Las Vegas - Cole Train or Mad Max? Gerrit Cole or Max Scherzer? If you're a music fan, then Cole Train is your choice. If you're a movie aficionado, then Mad Max is your guy. As for the stats, regular season and playoffs, Cole gets the nod and probably the Cy Young hardware. Why? A 20-5 record, a slim 2.50 ERA, 326 Ks, and an invisible WHIP of 0.89. For those not into WHIP, it's a combo of walks plus hits divided by innings pitched. And the only other pitcher in MLB with a better WHIP? The game two starter, Justin Verlander. Back to Cole Train. His work in the playoffs has been BETTER than anyone, by a mile. In three starts, he has allowed just 1 earned run over 22 innings (0.41 ERA) with a RIDONKULOUS 32 Ks. Scherzer ain't a slouch, but he did miss a month, and wasn't really Mad Max-ish after coming back. But he seems to have found his groove in the playoffs, allowing 4 earned over 19 innings (1.89 ERA) with 24 Ks. Have NEVER seen Max this big of an underdog, and while I'm Leaning Tower of Pisa to the Astros, might wait till game two to open the wallet.
