Las Vegas - Before we skate on to the NHL ice, my horse guy, Martin Calia, is dialed in on the Preakness Stakes. Talk to me Marty...
It’s been two weeks since Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby. Bill Mott opted to skip the second jewel of the Triple Crown to run in the Belmont in June. But second place finisher Journalism returns and is the 8/5 morning line favorite. There is a lot to like about Journalism. His second place finish was a valiant effort which produced his third straight triple digit speed Beyer (102). The only other colt with a comparable speed figure is #8 Clever Again and he earned that figure at one mile. The Preakness is a mile and three sixteenths. If he can duplicate that speed figure in his front running style with no pressure, he could upset Journalism. But that’s a big if considering #1 Goal Oriented will no doubt fire from the one post or sit off the flank of Clever Again. Goal Oriented is undefeated in two races and steps up to graded stakes company today. It’s a big ask for this Bob Baffert trainee who like Journalism is coming off 2 weeks rest after winning his last race at Churchill Downs. Another colt who can pull off an upset is # 6River Thames. This ultra consistent Pletcher trainee lost by a neck to Sovereignty in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream and then by three quarters of a length to Burnam Square in the Bluegrass. He too could easily be four for four with a little racing luck. But we will stick with the favorite Journalism today. The bet $100 on #2 Journalism to win. Then we can bet $20 exactas with #2 over 1-6-8. A $5 superfecta #2 over 1-6-8. Just in case, lets play an exacta box of numbers 1-2-6-8.
Good luck
Skating on to the ice and gonna throw down on game six of the Stars/Jets series. If you're thinking that Winnipeg has a chance because of the 4-0 bagel they fed Dallas on Thursday night, DON'T. Lemme throw a little recent history at you. The Jets bageled the Stars 4-0, also in Winnipeg, in game two of the series. Then Dallas came back home and rocked the Jets 5-2. Go back to the last series when the Avalanche bageled the Stars in Denver, then Dallas came back home and crushed the Avs in the next game, 6-2. The Stars are 5-1 at home so far in the playoffs while the Jets are on an OH & FIVE run on the road. Ouch! You know the song. 'The Stars at night. Are big and bright. Deep in the heart of Texas.' Gimme Dallas for the money.
